W2-2 Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods

A Short Summary of ‘Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods’

This part of the book is about the methods employed in sociology and some standards of the methods and what it tells us. In scientific methods, there are four steps. Characterization, hypothesis, prediction and testing. For the best prediction in scientific methods, we need to know the correct relationship between correlation and causation. It is important not to mistake correlation and causation. Also, quantitative and qualitative methods are two different approaches of sociological research. Depending on how we approach, we can classify objective approach, critical approach and subjective approach. Overall, it is important to obey ethics.

Something I learned after reading ‘Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods’

What I found interesting was that even though sociology is in the Liberal Arts, it includes different scientific methods. And by using these methods, we can make predictions and explain various social issues. I believe that human behaviors are much harder to predict than other behaviors because there are so many variables.

Something I want to know more about this topic?

I want to know specifically how the process works with and example.
Also, I was curious what are the similarities and differences between social science and natural science.

Comments

  1. I think exploring is the similarities. Because both social science and natural science have to explore each phenomenon and make a significant result.
