ht tps://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Introduction_to_Sociology/Race_and_Ethnicity  Topics in Soci ology_Race and Ethnicity 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.   Racial classification is caused by human biological classification according to morphological characteristics such as skin color. One cannot choose to belong to one's identity and is classified into an external group that is determined from birth. The concept of race and certain ethnic groups are often controversial topics about social identity and class. The race is also associated with physical characteristics, but it also refers to the social characteristics shared by races in each group. Social characteristics include nationality, tribe, religious belief, language, culture, tradition, etc. The term ethnicity focuses more on a group's connection to a perceived shared past and culture. An example of an ethnic group in the U.S. is Hispanic or Latino. 2. Mention of any new, interesting or ...

Week 13-1. Topics in Sociology_Gender

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Introduction_to_Sociology/Gender  Topics in Soci ology_Gender 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.  Gender is the range of characteristics pertaining to, and differentiating between, masculinity and femininity. Depending on the context, these characteristics may include biological sex, sex-based social structures or gender identity. The social science have a branch devoted to gender studies. Other science, such as sexology and neuroscience, are also interested in the subject. The social sciences sometimes approach gender as a social construct, and gender studies particularly do, while research in the natural sciences investigates whether biological differences in males and females influence the development of gender in humans; both inform debate about how far biological differences influence the formation of gender identity. Similar to 'sex', 'gender' is an interpretation of socially constructed patterns of human behav...

Week 12-2. Topics in Sociology_Social inequality

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_inequality  Topics in Soci ology_ Social inequality 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.   Social inequality means that the resources of a society are not evenly distributed through norms, but they go to people in certain categories. This occurs according to the discriminatory preferences of social goods distributed to power, religion, kinship, reputation, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, class, etc. Generally, it means that the results are less equal, but it can be conceptualized in terms of a lack of equal access to opportunities. The distribution of resources in society often places too much importance on people's hierarchical social classifications. In most cases, social inequality is associated with racial inequality, ethnic inequality, and gender inequality, which can also be associated with corruption.  In most countries, the 'Gini coefficient' is used as the most common indicator of soci...

Week 12-1. Topics in Sociology_Social stratification

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_stratification  Topics in Soci ology_ Social stratification 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.  Social stratification means classifying people into groups based on economic factors such as wealth, income, race, education, gender, occupation, social status and power. This is the relative social position of a person within the social unit. The degree of social inequality is an important factor in determining a person's social stratum. There are four principles underlying social stratification. 1) social stratification is socially defined as a property of a society rather than individuals in that society. 2) social stratification is reproduced from generation to generation . 3) social stratification is universal (found in every society) but variable (differs across time and place). 4) social stratification involves not just quantitative  inequality  but qualitative beliefs and attitudes about social...

+ Makeup Class 2. Topics in Sociology_Demographics

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Introduction_to_Sociology/Demography   Topics in Sociology_Demographics 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.  Demographics is a study of human demographic dynamics, a study of the size, structure and distribution of the population, and how the population changes over time, such as birth and death. Demographic analysis can be classified into groups defined by standards such as education, religion, and ethnicity, including the whole society. The main reason for studying demographics is often beneficial in explaining world events. Since this is also a study of people, it has the same roots as sociology as a social change involving science and industrial revolution. This can be seen mainly from large-scale data derived from census and registration statistics. Still, many countries, especially developing countries, have difficulty obtaining reliable demographic data. 2. Mention of any new, interesting or unusual items learned...

Week 11-2. Topics in Sociology_Dramaturgy (sociology)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dramaturgy_(sociology)  Topics in Soci ology_ Dramaturgy (sociology) 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.   Dramaturgy is the sociological view used in micro-sociological accounts of social interaction in everyday life. The term was first used in sociology in Erving Goffman's book, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life. The elements of human interaction here claim to depend on time, place, and audience. Thus, Erving Goffman's idea of "self" is a sense of who he is, and a dramatic effect from the immediate scene. The goal of self-expression is to get the audience's response through carefully performed performances. If the actor succeeds, the audience will see the actor as they please. There are 7 main point that Goffman identifies with respect to the performance: 1.   Belief in the part one is playing is important, even if it cannot be judged by others. The audience can only try to guess whether the per...

Week 11-1. Topics in Sociology_Symbolic_Interactionism

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_interactionism  Topics in Soci ology_ Symbolic_Interactionism 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.  Symbolic interaction is a sociological theory that produces images or connotations from practical consideration and implication, such as inference or communion with others. This helps us understand how society is maintained and changed through repetitive interactions between individuals. Individuals act on the premise of a common understanding within the social context. This began in the middle of the 20th century from a sociological perspective. American philosophy of pragmatism especially derived from pragmatic method to interpret social interactions in the study of George Herbert Mead. This is especially important in micro sociology and social psychology. Most symbolic interactionists believe that social justice develops in relation to something real. Therefore, these people do not respond directly to reality, bu...

Technology is a collection of techniques and methods used to achieve goals, such as the production of goods or services, and scientific research. These technologies can be built into machines, computers, devices, factories, etc. Technology mainly means knowledge that facilitates production, but technology products can also be technology that helps promote the production of products and services. The process used to make cars is also a form of technology. One of the most popular technologies people use is smart phones. The introduction of this technology has brought many changes to society. Social network provides a theory that explains the various patterns observed in social structures. This is an interdisciplinary field. Social networks first emerged in studies in the field of sociology to study interpersonal relationships.  This is a useful composition for studying relationships between individuals, groups, organizations, and the entire society in social science. Social network access to understand social interactions is useful for extensive research. The analytical levels of social networks are divided into 1) Micro-level 2) Meso-level 3) Macro level.  The micro-level is when you track social relationships that can begin with small groups of individuals at a micro level. The meso-level begins with the si...

Week 10-1. Topics in Sociology_Social Structure

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Introduction_to_Sociology/Social_Structure  Topics in Soci ology_ Social Structure 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read. Social structure is the concept that society is grouped into structures such as function, purpose, meaning, etc. For example, the concept of 'social stratification' refers to the idea of dividing into different classes according to social classifications such as race, class, disability, gender, etc. The social treatment that people receive within various social structures is also related to this. The concept of social structure is important because 'structural determination' can occur. Structural determination occur when the behavior of people and organizations is guided by the basic structure of the social system. According to 2003 statistics, 15 percent of the adult population in the United States has tattoos more than one on their body. Accor...

Week 9-2. (EXTRA) Where do we learn more: in schools or outside?

Where do we learn more: in schools or outside? I think we can learn more in school than outside. The regular education course at school is not everything. We can develop social skills in a school with teachers, friends, seniors and juniors, and learn many things through any conversations or situations. These are things we can't learn from home schooling or academies. I studied at a special purpose high school aimed at fostering foreign languages. My grades were not very good because it was a place where excellent students from the our region gathered. My grades were not that good compared to other friends, so my self-esteem dropped. So I told my parents and wanted to do home schooling. My parents prevented me from dropping out of school, saying that it is not only a place to learn regular education, but also a place to develop social skills. As a result, I feel very fortunate to have completed higher education until the end. Discussions, competition, and cooperation with m...

Week 9-2. (EXTRA) How can we reduce the suicide rates in Korea?

How can we reduce the suicide rates in Korea? It is important to have an attitude that loves oneself, not to compares yourself to others, and doesn't fall into self-deprecation. There is no end to comparison. Comparing appearance with others, comparing wealth, specs, and academic comparisons make one feel shabby. It is important to love yourself and live your own life. It need an attitude of prioritizing what I want to do, what I am good at and thinking of my happiness as the top priority. In case of school violence or sexual violence, it is important to tell your parents or professional institutions for help instead of leaving it as your own concern. Don't hesitate to open your heart. Those who have done wrong should be punished. Lastly, do not be afraid of what other people see or think of me. In my life, no one else has much influence on me. Think of me as the master of my life.

Week 9-2. (EXTRA) Why do you think South Korea places so high on 'Suicide rate' ranking?

Why do you think South Korea places so high on 'Suicide rate' ranking?  I think Korea is more enthusiastic about education than other countries. Parents' expectations for their children are also high. They put a lot of effort getting into a good school because they think studying has a big impact on their career and future success. They used to insist on a good university, but now, to enter a good high school or middle school is also important. Parents don't spare money on their children's education. It's a kind of way that parents love their children. It is to make generous investments for the future of their children. Children fall into a sense of shame, if they fail to live up to their parents' expectations. They are thinking that "I'm a failure," "I'm useless," and "What's wrong with my life?" They are constantly self-deprecating.  These are the reasons why many Korean students commit suicide. In addition, t...

Week 9-2. (EXTRA) Why inequality creates disorder?

Why inequality creates disorder? Everyone should be equal. We are entitled to the same treatment under the same conditions. However, if inequality is not taken for granted and is prevalent in society, social chaos and disorder occur.  Inequality in society makes people feel unfair and angry. If this inequality is not easily resolved by law, rights, etc., it creates social disorder.  Social disorder is bound to follow according to inequality. This is inevitable. The state has a duty to address inequality, even in order to prevent disorder.

Week 9-1. Topics in Sociology_Socialization

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Introduction_to_Sociology/Socialization  Topics in Soci ology_ Socialization 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.  Socialization is a sociological concept, a process of preparing human beings to function in social life. This is culturally relative, so people of different cultures, races, classes, genders, and religions are socialized differently. Socialization, in essence, does not require evaluation or judgment, nor should it be required. Socialization is the adoption of culture, so it should be acknowledged and understood that it can be different. It also helps adapt socially,  but does not address all aspects of human behavior. Socializing are divided into two groups: 1) primary socialization and 2) secondary socialization. Primary socialization is done early in childhood, and secondary socialization is an additional learning socialization, lifelong socialization that people learn by meeting new groups. These oc...

Week 9-1. (EXTRA) Color pink is associated with girls? Why?

Image
Color pink is associated with girls? Why? I think it's influenced by the colors of many toys and baby products. Also, through many things that can be seen in everyday life, it seems that girl naturally have a perception of pink and boy are blue. For example, women's restroom is marked in pink and men's restroom in blue.  I think it is necessary to distinguish colors for this purpose. Having a symbolic meaning is not a bad thing. However, the prejudice that girl should have pink items unconditionally and boy should have blue ones unconditionally is wrong. We have the freedom to like any colors, also have, and pursue the all colors.

Week 9-1. (EXTRA) Why does the society hold together?

Image
Why does the society hold together?  Society is a group of many people. In society, individuals cannot live alone. We can live well by working with others, cooperating with others, and communicating with them. Because it's a society where people can't live alone, people have become united. For example in Korea, I remember that a Korea society hold together for the ouster of president Park Geun-hye. One more thing, there's one more reason why society can't help but unite. I think it's to respond to power. In order to respond to strong power, citizens hold together to join forces, to confront them. Because those in power can't ignore many of these united citizens. The good thing about social cohesion is that it's more powerful than the sound of each individual.

Week 8-2. Topics in Sociology_Government

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government  Topics in Soci ology_ Government 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read. A government is a system or group that organizes and controls society. Governments generally consist of the legislature, the administration, and the judiciary. Make laws in the legislature, enforce laws in the administration, and make judgments and punishments in the judiciary. There are many forms of government include ‘Monarchy’, Aristocracy’, ‘Timocracy’, ‘Oligarchy’, ‘Democracy’, ‘Theocracy’, and ‘Tyranny’. The main philosophy of government is dealing about “How to get political power”, and the two main methods are ‘electoral contest’ and ‘hereditary succession’. Also there are ‘Libertarianism’ and ‘Anarchism’ that pursue limit or abolish government and finding self-organization and freedom. One way to classify government is through 'which people have the authority to rule'. According to article, it can be either one person, or th...

Week 8-2. (EXTRA) Is modern democracy really "the will of the people"?

Image
Is modern democracy really "the will of the people"?  As a Korean, if you look at the situation and history of Korea, I can say yes. Korea is a country run by the will of the people(citizen). If state affairs aren't properly managed, the president, the head of the state, can be impeached. Also suggestions or reports on unfair or unjust cases can be made through '국민 청원(national petition)'; board that can tell complaints to the president and the government.  But, I don't really know about whole of modern society. It's too various range. I'm not sure if it's going in a good direction or not.
