Make up classes-6. Internet has significantly contributed to globalization both in economy and in culture. Can we think of some examples?

Internet has significantly contributed to globalization both in economy and in culture.  Can we think of some examples?  The development of the Internet has had a great impact on globalization. Typical examples are globalization of trade in goods, globalization of service trade, globalization of capital movement, and globalization of labor movement.  First, the development of the Internet promotes the globalization of trade in goods. With the development of Internet-based cyber trade, globalization is expanding. As the efficiency of web-based import and export business increases, the number and volume of transactions are exploding. Also, unlike traditional trade, cyber trade is very simple and fast, so it takes less time and money than traditional trade methods.  Second, Internet development promotes the globalization of service trade. Examples of service trade include education, finance, and travel. The most visible part is the globalization of the entert...

Make up classes-5. How to reduce the digital divide?

How to reduce the digital divide?  The digital divide is the gap that the poor, the disabled, rural residents, and the elderly have insufficient access to communication technology. The digital divide occurs in groups where economically difficult and poorly educated people have little or no access to the Internet. This leads to a gap in social participation among groups, as a cause of economic differences, and as the vicious cycle continues, the gap gradually increases, leading to social inequality and alienation. Therefore, the digital divide must be reduced.  There are many ways to solve this digital divide. It can be broadly divided into government, social, and technical aspects. First, the government should strengthen the guarantee of access to information by vulnerable groups. For example, it is necessary to improve the environment of information use in vulnerable areas such as farming and fishing villages and strive to disseminate information and communication de...

Make up classes-4. Who is affected by the digital divide? Can we think of some groups?

Who is affected by the digital divide? Can we think of some groups?  The digital information gap means that as digitalization becomes more common, the gap increases according to the level of digital information. People who can properly use digital enjoy the convenience of digital, while people who can use digital properly feel uncomfortable. The digital information gap does not end with a simple 'gap' but expands into social gaps such as perception, thought, and culture, causing alienation.  In particular, digital services have been expanded due to the influence of COVID-19. The untact service has been expanded to refrain from human-to-human contact. Instead of going shopping at crowded markets, people buy food through the delivery app. Disaster support money can be received in one minute by mobile banking without waiting in a long line. Information for mask purchase can also be known in real time through a mobile application. Also, when buying something outside, use ...

Make up classes-3. What did I learn from this class?

What did I learn from this class? The biggest gain from this class is the interest in social issues. In the past, I've been simply reading news or reading articles on social issues, and I haven't thought about them. However, after I learned about related subjects while taking the class, I consciously thought about related issues. Also, when I saw what I had learned while watching the news, I was able to focus more and see more things than before. Throughout the course of the semester, I achieved the reason I chose this class, which I wrote on the blog for the first class, and the goals I wanted to achieve in the class. There were three reasons I chose classes. The first was to develop a wider view of social phenomena. Secondly, I wanted to learn about other cultures with interest in other cultures. The third was to learn the background knowledge needed to become a social teacher. Since I majored in economics, I tended to see social phenomena as economics. However, I was able ...

Make up classes-2. Introduction to Sociology/Demography

1. Summary   Demography is the study of human population dynamics. It encompasses the study of the size, structure and distribution of populations, and how populations change over time due to births, deaths, migration, and aging. Demographics is an important basis for explaining social phenomena. It was created as a basis for taxation and a basis for political representation. Because it is interested in changing the population, it pays great attention to birth and death rates. Fertility rates are affected by several factors. Fertility decreases with increased use of contraception. Women's educational achievement is also one of the factors that predict fertility. Education itself is not reducing fertility, but is highly related to other factors. An increase in the level of education is likely to delay women's marriage, increase women's participation in labor, and use contraception. In addition, fertility rates are closely related to the level of development in the count...

Make up classes-1. Introduction to Sociology/Technology, the Internet, and Virtual Worlds

1. Summary  The development of science and technology has resulted in research results related to new social life areas. In particular, it describes changes due to the development of science and technology, social networks, and video gaming. A typical example of modern science and technology is a mobile phone. With the introduction of mobile phones, there have been many changes in society. With the spread of mobile phones, the visible form of public telephones has changed, but social customs have also changed. Social norms have been developed regarding the use of mobile phones in public situations. In addition, people's dependence on mobile phones has increased. The development of social networks has also brought many changes to society. Social networks have the advantage of staying in touch with friends and family, but they also have a lot of side effects. People tend to be overly immersed in social networks to increase their sense of belonging to the social groups they belon...

Week 13-6. Write about the legal changes improving the situation of women in South Korea in the past 30 years.

In the past 30 years, there have been several legal changes in Korea that change the status of women. The biggest issue was the abolition of the system on the head of family. The system on the head of the family consisted of regulations on the composition, right to head of family, and succession to head of family, centered around head of family. However, partial revisions were made in 1977, 1900, and 2002 as a result of the Family Law Reform Campaign to realize gender equality and democratic family laws in the Family Law, and by 2005, a civil law amendment aimed at abolishing the abolition of the system on the head of family was finally promulgated.  The system on the head of family has undermined equal family relations by subjugating family members to the head of the family, denying individual autonomy and dignity and ranking them uniformly Women, in particular, were under the control of a father before marriage, a husband after marriage, and a son when a husband dies. In add...

Week 13-5. Gender roles – or what is expected of men and women in home and workplace?

In society, the underlying sexual role clearly exists. I think that women should focus on housework and parenting, and men should work at work. This did not take into account the individual's aptitude and circumstances. This is oppressive and burdensome for the individual. There is no gender difference between housework, parenting, and work. It is merely a projection of the consciousness universally considered by society. Korea has reduced this gender stereotype more than before, but it has not disappeared completely. Still, women feel more pressure on household chores and parenting than men, and men feel more pressure to make money as heads. This is from the previous generation and is the result of unconscious injection from childhood. Work and family should be distributed equally through mutual respect regardless of gender, and should be tailored to individual characteristics and aptitudes rather than social stereotypes.

Week 13-4. What toys are marketed for boys, and what for girls?

When most people think of children's toys, they will identify toys for boys and girls. The most visible difference is the color difference. If you go to the toy section of a large supermarket, it is divided into places marked in blue and pink, even if they are not marked as boys or girls. It is natural to distinguish pink for girls and blue for boys. In addition to this, there are also significant differences in the types of toys. Most of the girl's toys are focused on kitchen play, laundry, cooking, doll play, mother play, and dressing. Toy products related to housework, childcare, and care are often seen in girls. This is to give children a social role, which is divided according to gender, like custom. In addition, there are many toys that refer to playing house as mother's play and refine the appearance. On the other hand, there are a lot of toys that emphasize the activity of a boy by using a 'hero'. Mainly, robots, cars, and top toys are on display. It is eas...

Week 13-3. Is Korea becoming multiethnic? Why?

Korea's becoming multicultural has a great influence on globalization. There are many aspects to the transition to a multicultural society. The first is the domestic influx of foreign workers. Countries that have a relatively homogeneous culture are influencing the migration of foreign workers due to the globalization of capital and labor, and a variety of cultures are being introduced. The globalization of the economy will further increase the inflow of foreign workers into the country. In particular, in Korea, the number of foreign workers will continue to increase due to a decrease in the number of people who can produce due to low birth rate and aging population. The second is foreign spouses from international marriages. Currently, the proportion of migrant women in international marriages continues to increase, and they are becoming a major member of our society. The third is the influx of Korean culture. The spread of Korean culture represented by K-POP creates interest in ...

Week 13-2. Introduction to Sociology/Race and Ethnicity

1. Summary  A race is grouped by judging by physical differences and an ethnicity refers not to physical characteristics but social traits that are shared by a human population. Some of the social traits often used for ethnic classification include nationality, tribe, religious faith, shared language, shared cultures and shared traditions. The definition of the division of humanity into distinct races has changed. Because racial differences continue to be important issues in social and political life, racial classifications continue. In this regard, there are two opinions: race is social construction and biological lineage. The social construct does not have a basis in the natural world but is simply an artificial distinction created by humans. On the other hand, some sociologists believe that race is a valid and useful measure when understood as fuzzy sets, clusters, or extended families. There are also combining approaches that combine these two approaches.  Racism ca...

Week 13-1. Introduction to Sociology/Gender

1. Summary  Gender is distinct from sex. Gender is social and sex is biological. Gender is distinguished by masculine and feminine behaviors perceived by society. This is culturally established. Cis sex/gender people are those who conform to the existing notions of sex and gender within a given social, historical, cultural, political, and scientific context. Trans sex/gender people are those who do not conform to the existing notions of sex and gender within a given social, historical, cultural, political, and scientific context.  Men and women have biological and social and psychological differences. There are some clear physiological differences between the two sexes. In addition, gender differences typically vary by society, environment, historical context, and/or culture, indicating they are social constructions. A typical example is work and occupations between two genders. Women's participation in labor has changed a lot according to the trend of the times. Before...

Week 12-3. Which are more important?

Which are more important? Social status is determined by various factors of the individual in society. There are income, age, race, sex, education, occupation and residence. I think the most important of them is income, because the biggest factor in modern capitalist society is the economic factor. Economical is essential above all for us to solve food, clothing and shelter. To meet a need, people solve it through consumption. Economic inequality also causes inherent inequality. Inequality exists as a result, but there is also inequality of opportunity. Economic differences also result in consequential inequality, but opportunity inequality of opportunity. People with different economic conditions have less access to education or health care. There is also increased instability in housing and safety. There are economic factors at this base. More wealth can benefit from higher quality education and health care. In modern times, where many things can be enjoyed, much of life is a...

Week 12-2. Social inequality

1. Summary  Social inequality is a phenomenon caused by uneven distribution of social resources. It is the differentiation preference of access of social goods in the society brought about by power, religion, kinship, prestige, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, and class. Social inequality generally means inequality in results, but is also considered inequality in access to opportunities. The main examples of social inequality are income disparity, gender inequality, health care and social class. Social inequality is found in almost every society. This intensifies as society becomes more complex and members' social roles and positions increase. Social inequality can be classified into egalitarian societies, ranked society, and stratified society. There is no discrimination because the Egalitarian Society advocates social equality. A ranked society is an agricultural community that is classically grouped from the chapters that appear to have a status in most soc...

Week 12-1. Social stratification

1. Summary  Social stratification is the classification of a society that divides people into groups based on socio-economic factors. In other words, stratification refers to the relative position within society. The categorization of people by social stratum occurs most clearly in complex state-based, polycentric, or feudal societies. Determining the structures of social stratification arises from inequalities of status among persons, therefore, the degree of social inequality determines a person's social stratum. Generally, the greater the social complexity of a society, the more social stratification exists, by way of social differentiation.  Four principles are posited to underlie social stratification. First, social stratification is socially defined as a property of a society rather than individuals in that society. Second, social stratification is reproduced from generation to generation. Third, social stratification is universal but variable. Fourth, social stra...

Week 11-4. Did you find yourself changing your presentation when you met with different people? Male/females? Attractive/ nor attractive? Others?

Did you find yourself changing your presentation when you met with different people? Male/females? Attractive/ nor attractive? Others?  I look a little different depending on the situation and the people I meet. Perhaps many people feel like that. As a family member, as a friend, as a student, and as a worker, I look a little different. In my judgment, I act according to the situation. Because there is a figure of me that is required in each situation. I do not act as comfortable as I am at home at work. When I’m with friends, use a more comfortable way of speaking and dress more comfortably than you do in a public affair. At work, they are more professional and formal. For example, formal expressions are used when speaking in a suit. It is so natural and familiar for me to change my appearance when meeting other people in different situations.

Week 11-3. What is more important: the actions of individuals or the environment that influences them?

What is more important: the actions of individuals or the environment that influences them?  I think the impact of the environment is more important. Because people are exposed to their surroundings before they are born and reveal their temperament. After a child is born, he or she is influenced by his or her parents and family and his or her surroundings Exposure to various situations accumulates information about the situation and causes it to act accordingly. Individual behavior is important, but I think it has already been affected by many circumstances before individual actions are important. In other words, individual actions are the result of the environment, not the expression of the individual alone.  For example, you can see from the trends of different people in different generations. The post-war generation and the generation heavily influenced by development in the new media are different. In the previous era, gender roles were distinguished by necessity an...

Week 11-2. Dramaturgy (sociology)

1. Summary Dramaturgy is a sociological perspective that explains social interaction. This is Erving Goffman's idea, and he viewed theatre as a metaphor. He forms a theatrical metaphor that defines how humans present themselves to others based on cultural values, norms and beliefs. A dramaturgical action is a social action that is designed to be seen by others and to improve one's public self-image. Dramaturgical perspective analyzes the context. The individual's identity is performed through roles, and consensus between the actor and the audience. Because of this dependence on consensus to define social situations.  Stages refer to the three distinct areas where different individuals with different roles and information can be found. There are three stages: front, back and outside. He clearly distinguishes behavior on the front and back stages. In Front stage, the action is shown to the audience and is part of the performance. In other words, it is where in society ...

Week 11-1. Symbolic interactionism

1. Summary  Symbolic interaction is a social science theory that people are connected and communicated through symbols. You can see how society is created and maintained through repetitive interactions between individuals. Individuals act on a common understanding within the social context. Therefore, the interaction and the resulting actions are interpreted in a way that is common to all. Most symbolic interactionists believe a physical reality does indeed exist by an individual's social definitions, and that social definitions do develop in part or in relation to something "real". People thus do not respond to this reality directly, but rather to the social understanding of reality. There are three assumptions frame symbolic interactionism. First, Humans act toward things on the basis of the meanings they ascribe to those things. Second, The meaning of such things is derived from, or arises out of, the social interaction that one has with others and the society. Th...

Week 10-3. Can we think of other examples of role strain or conflict, particularly in the Korean context?

Role conflict occurs because one person belongs to different roles in different groups. Conflicts occur when the roles between them differ in what they seek. Role strain is often caused by different demands and expectations for different social positions granted to individuals.  In Korea, there are often conflicts between work and family roles. Because what one person can do at the same time is limited. If there is a project in the company and I have to go on a business trip, but I have a child at home, of course, there is a conflict between them. Especially for women, these social role tensions or conflicts are felt more directly. In fact, many working women have these concerns. Even when COVID19 spread, working women thought a lot about their roles. Due to the risk of infection, the kindergarten was not run, so there was no place to care for the child and the role of parents at home grew. However, there were many women who were having a hard time because they had to play their...
