Week 3.1. Introduction to Sociology_Scientific Method

 Introduction to Sociology_Scientific Method

1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.

It’s all about the scientific method, which follows an empirical method. This has been developed since the 17th century. This method requires very careful observation, because it can be distorted one’s gaze. The procedure can be slightly different depending on the subject, but they are mostly similar. “Making a hypothesis, deriving predictions from them as logical consequences and carrying out experiments or empirical observations based on those predictions.”

2. Mention of any new, interesting or unusual items learned.

It was interesting that we need to do components, in addition to the basic procedure. It was 3 components, Replication, External review and Data recording and sharing.

We should repeat experiment and see if results come out same. If it’s not same, that research cannot be said produced the right results. Also, we must review by an anonymous external (the experts). They will give us some advice of mistakes, missing parts and so on. This surely be helpful to the research. Last, is recording and sharing the data with others will helpful to develop more.

While these are not the components that are really required for scientific method research. However, there are some cases which are neglected at research.

3. Identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more.

They told that the scientific method is not a single recipe, it required intelligence, imagination and creativity. In this sense, it’s not just standard procedures to follow, ongoing cycle that constantly developing more useful and accurate.

It sounds little bit interesting, but I'm also worry that one’s imagination and creativity can ruin the research. Of course, external review can help this problem! I believe.
