Dramaturgy (Sociology)

1. Summary

-      Dramaturgy is a sociological perspective commonly used in micro-social explanations of social interactions in everyday life. In drama sociology, it is argued that the elements of human interaction depend on time, place and courtesy. The dramatic view is one of several sociological paradigms separate from other sociological theories because it analyzes context rather than examining the causes of human behavior. In the dramatic model, social interaction is analyzed in such a way that people live their lives like actors acting on stage. There are also seven important factors identified by Goffman regarding performance. The steps represent three areas (front, back, outside) where you can find multiple individuals with different roles and information. Front stage is that part of the individual’s performance which regularly functions in a general and fixed fashion. The backstage allows the performer to relax, put his front down and escape the character without speaking in his line. Outside is a place where an individual does not participate in the performance. For many performances, several special roles are created for this, as the audience must be kept out of information. There are many types of secrets that must be hidden for various reasons. There are also three basic roles, each focusing on who can access what information. The roles can be divided into three groups, one that handles operational information and team boundaries, one that promotes interaction between the other two teams, and one that mixes the front and back areas. Exposure management refers to the task of maintaining the desired exposure, which consists of defense and protection technologies. Defensive skills are used before interactions begin and participate. It was argued that dramaturgy should only be applied in cases involving people related to the entire organ. This theory is designed for the whole institution and some believe that the theory should not be applied where it has not been tested.

2. Interesting

-      The word Dramaturgy itself was the first word I heard, and it came as a surprise. It was also interesting that if we imagine ourselves as directors observing what is happening in our daily lives, we are doing what we call dramatic analysis, a study of social interactions in terms of theater performance.

3. Discussion

-      What do you think of Dramaturgy? Is it positive or critical?
-      Do you think Dramaturgy is only used as an analytical tool? Or is it an actual description of the consciousness of an individual consciously expressing himself?

Comments

  1. I think positively about Dramaturgy theory. Because people have parts that are shown to others and have their own space. In these two spaces, people show different behaviors and think they are familiar with it. Of course, I can't say that Dramaturgy is absolutely right, but I think it's a concept that can think about individual behavior in social interaction.

  3. I didn't understand the external stage well, but I think your summary is a little helpful.
