W11-1. Symbolic interactionism

1. Summary

Symbolic interactionism is a theory that studies how individuals interact to create a symbolic world, and in return how these worlds shape individual behavior.

The symbolic interaction consists of three processes. 1) Individuals construct meaning via the communication process. 2) Self-concept is a motivation for behavior. 3)A unique relationship exists between the individual and society. There is another premise derived from the following assumptions. 1) "Humans act toward things on the basis of the meanings they ascribe to those things." 2) "The meaning of such things is derived from, or arises out of, the social interaction that one has with others and the society." 3) "The Meanings are handled in, and modified through, an interpretative process used by the person in dealing with the things he/she encounters."

Symbolic interactionists are often criticized for their method of research being somewhat disorganized. It is argued that the theory is not one theory but a framework of several different theories. Also, some theorists consider there is a problem with the theory of symbolic interaction because of the lack of testability.

2. Interesting

The theories related to the new media and the views on interaction within the online community and correlation with offline were impressive.

3. Discussion

Online, by the nature of anonymity, will apply a different interaction system from reality. I wonder how this interaction system appears as a link between reality and how it connects.
