W11. Dramaturgy
Summary
Dramaturgy is a theory that socially describes the social interaction used in everyday life. This theory was discovered by Erving Goffman, whose theory influenced Burke of later generations.
Goffman explains, in dramaturgy, human interaction is influenced by time, place, and audience, all the people around him who refer to the object of interaction. And he is assumed to be an actor in the play. He concentrates on the role given to him to make the play successful, and when he perfectly performs his role, he can improve his self-image. This is called self-expression.
However, theatrical theory is criticized. dramaturgy is a theory that analyzes social interaction, but it does not analyze the causes of human behavior but investigates social context. Also, with social consensus for the play in advance, does it really mean interaction? in the sense that
To overcome this, theatrical theory suggests that 'impression management'. Impression management refers to considering clothes, speech, behavior, etc. to impress others in everyday life. In other words, When there is an audience, actors have to pay attention to makeup, clothing, and speech to act as actors, without an audience, actors perform various acts that do not fit into the play and distinguish between the stage and the backstage, which is considered a social context.
Interesting point
It seems to be the most empathetic theory ever heard of all the social theories I've ever heard. The particularly good part is that humans are considered actors, and that they are divided into the front and the back of the stage to distinguish their behavior. I think it's a great social insight.
