Week 11-2. Dramaturgy_(sociology)

 1. Summary

A dramatic phenomenon is a sociological perspective commonly used in micro-social explanations of social interactions in everyday life. In dramatic sociology, it is argued that the elements of human interaction depend on time, place, and audience. Dramatic behavior is a social behavior designed to make it visible to others and improve one's public self-image. A dramatic view is one of several sociological paradigms separated from other sociological theories because contexts are analyzed without investigating the causes of human behavior. Dramatic theory suggests that an individual's identity is not a stable and independent psychological entity, but rather is constantly being re-created by the person interacting with others.

2. Interesting

I found it interesting to hear that in a dramatic model, social interactions are analyzed from the perspective of how people live their lives like actors on stage. This analysis shows the concept of status and role. The state is like a part of a play and the role serves as a script that provides dialogue and action for the characters. Like on stage, people manage the environment, clothes, words, and nonverbal behavior to make a special impression on others in their daily lives. Goffman described each individual's "performance" as an effort to express himself, a specific impression on other people's minds. This process is also referred to as "impression management".

3. Discussion

Burke believed that life was actually a theater, and Goffman saw it as a metaphor. Whose opinion do you agree with?

Comments

  1. I agree with Goffman. I think life, like his argument, is like a play and the role is a socially assigned role.
