Week 13-2. Introduction to Sociology/Race and Ethnicity

1. Summary

A race is grouped by judging by physical differences and an ethnicity refers not to physical characteristics but social traits that are shared by a human population. Some of the social traits often used for ethnic classification include nationality, tribe, religious faith, shared language, shared cultures and shared traditions. The definition of the division of humanity into distinct races has changed. Because racial differences continue to be important issues in social and political life, racial classifications continue. In this regard, there are two opinions: race is social construction and biological lineage. The social construct does not have a basis in the natural world but is simply an artificial distinction created by humans. On the other hand, some sociologists believe that race is a valid and useful measure when understood as fuzzy sets, clusters, or extended families. There are also combining approaches that combine these two approaches.
Racism can refer to any or all of the following beliefs and behaviors: race is the primary determinant of human capacities, a certain race is inherently superior or inferior to others, individuals should be treated differently according to their racial classification and the actual treating of individuals differently based on their racial classification. Racism is recognized by many as an affront to basic human dignity and a violation of human rights. This racial discrimination mainly occurs in the majority population. Assimilation of a minority group into a large group can also be seen as a form of racism. In the process, the minority group loses its character and is absorbed into the dominant group. Despite many studies, there are many forms of racism today and inequality in many aspects of society.

2. Interesting

The most memorable part about the racial stratification. I think people randomly divided the race into cosmetic divisions. For this reason, I think that race should not be the medium of social stratification. Unfortunately, we are discriminating by separating people by race. People's perceptions have improved, but inequality still occurs. Recently, there has been a lot of news about racial discrimination in the United States. I wonder who can distinguish people, and I feel a lot of sadness about discrimination against being born.

3.Discussion

What do you think is the primary cause of racial discrimination and racial discrimination?
