Week 13-6. Write about the legal changes improving the situation of women in South Korea in the past 30 years.

In the past 30 years, there have been several legal changes in Korea that change the status of women. The biggest issue was the abolition of the system on the head of family. The system on the head of the family consisted of regulations on the composition, right to head of family, and succession to head of family, centered around head of family. However, partial revisions were made in 1977, 1900, and 2002 as a result of the Family Law Reform Campaign to realize gender equality and democratic family laws in the Family Law, and by 2005, a civil law amendment aimed at abolishing the abolition of the system on the head of family was finally promulgated.

The system on the head of family has undermined equal family relations by subjugating family members to the head of the family, denying individual autonomy and dignity and ranking them uniformly Women, in particular, were under the control of a father before marriage, a husband after marriage, and a son when a husband dies. In addition, the system on the head of family encouraged the male preference that sons should be born to carry on generations by having a son, with the inherent legal feeling that sons are more important than daughters. It was abolished on the basis of these problems.

The system on the head of family has established a family concept that promotes gender discrimination and hinders the harmony and well-being of family members by regulating the relationship between the head of family and other family members as an authoritative practice. Therefore, it can be said that the abolition of the system on the head of family means the progress of gender equality and democratization in Korean society.

Comments

  1. I think the abolition of the family registry system is really an example of a change in the status of women. I think these improvements show that women and men are equal. Another example is that in Korea, when a child is born, the surname follows the father, but now it is legal to use the last name of the mother.
