W11. Symbolic Interactionism

Summary

The theory of symbolic interaction means how people or objects interact with each other to create a world in which individuals think, or through that interaction, they think with individuals. This theory was specifically advocated through the concept that the self of the Mid people is a social product and through Coulie's mirror self theory.

The symbolic interaction consists of three assumptions. First, "individuals form meaning through the process of communication." Second, "self-respect is motivation for action." Third, "There is a unique relationship between individuals and society."Through these three assumptions, the definition of human beings is formed: human beings are social animals, considering and acting on the meaning of things, and they say they understand the situation by directly defining the situation they are in.

However, symbolic interactions are often criticized. The reason is that the theory is not concrete, and the subject of the theory is too broad. It is also criticized that the theory of symbolic interaction is merely a framework of various theories.

Interesting point

The theory of symbolic interaction that humans are not affected by the situation, but that they feel a sense of crisis by defining and judging the situation they are in, was interesting.

Discussion

Humans are considered social animals because they cannot live alone. So, wouldn't animals that engage in group activities be considered social animals, too? There will be bonds between them, and they will be able to feel the sadness of losing each other's existence and family.
