W9-2: Socialization
1. Summary
Deviation is an act that goes against the cultural norms that people generally share. Deviation behavior appears mainly in two forms: formal deviance and informal deviance. Formal deviance is an act of violating what is stipulated by law, such as murder or robbery. Informal deviance is an act that violates what is not prohibited by law but is accepted as a social norm. Examples include picking your nose or burping loudly. Deviation can also be seen in different forms depending on the culture. Because the norms of each culture are relative.
According to Robert K. Merton's Social-Strain Typology, to distinguish the type of deviation, one's motivation or adherence to a goal, and one's belief in how to achieve it must be based. According to this, it is the result of ignoring other norms to pursue one value. Structural-Functionalism believes that deviant behavior plays an important role in shaping society. According to the Conflict Theory, deviant behavior occurs against unequal structure and power distribution. Labeling Theory is said to be the result of other people's forced identity for their actions as to why individuals deviate.
2. Interesting item
The way Labeling Theory understood deviant behavior was interesting. According to it, I think deviation is not an individual's fault, but the responsibility of society as a whole.
3. Question to discuss
How is Korea's social control being carried out to limit deviant behavior?
