 Topics in Sociology_Social Structure

1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.

Social structure is the concept that society is grouped into structures such as function, purpose, meaning, etc. For example, the concept of 'social stratification' refers to the idea of dividing into different classes according to social classifications such as race, class, disability, gender, etc. The social treatment that people receive within various social structures is also related to this. The concept of social structure is important because 'structural determination' can occur. Structural determination occur when the behavior of people and organizations is guided by the basic structure of the social system. It is important because many factors can be determined by the structure of the organization.

Social structure has been identified as

1) the relationship of definite entities or groups to each other,
2)  enduring patterns of behavior by participants in a social system in relation to each other, and
3) institutionalized norms or cognitive frameworks that structure the actions of actors in the social system.

2. Mention of any new, interesting or unusual items learned.

Some people think that the social structure was naturally developed, while others think it was caused by conflicts between groups such as competition. They think that structuralization is not the result of a natural process, but rather a social one. It can be created by power in the elite, or by an economic system that emphasizes competition or cooperation.

The concept of social structure can create prejudice. In particular, the social structure classified by gender is still subject to great discussion. Therefore, the analysis of modern social structure should look at various aspects of society in consideration of many variables.

3. Identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more.

Is social structure inevitable in every society? Does this only cause inequality in society? What are the positive effects of social structure? If the social structure is inevitable, what are the criteria for dividing the upper and lower classes?
