Week 10: Can we think of other examples of role strain or conflict, particularly in the Korean context?

Conflicts in roles can always occur in any country because it has different roles for different ages. When you are a teenager, the role of students and children is clear, and in your 20s, you can have various roles such as students, children, parents, and office workers. However, there is an example of an escalating conflict of roles in Korean society and a universal one. An example of that is the role conflict of women with children. In Korea, the role of women to care for and raise children is becoming more common, and there are expectations that women would like to raise their own children. That's why women of that generation are deeply conflicted about the role of mothers and office workers. It would be nice if you could harmonize your self-realization with the role of an office worker to make money, but since both are difficult to perfect, there seems to be a lot of tension or conflict in the role at this time. If it was in Korea before, people often quit their jobs and take care of their children, but now Korea is a little different from the past, so they may choose a little differently. In this case, women with children are the most likely examples of role tension or conflict in the Korean situation.

Comments

  1. I also think this situation is the most common role conflict in Korea. Many people feel the burden of their role because of the high responsibilities and expectations of their families for women. This social phenomenon is linked to an atmosphere of unwillingness to marry or have children.

  2. I agree. Fortunately, the stereotype of today's gender roles has been eased, and it will become more and more so in the future.
