Week 10: Social network

1. Summary
Social networks refer to learning social interaction as a set of social structures. The analysis of social networks is essentially a cross-disciplinary discipline and comes from social psychology, sociology, statistics and graph theory. Social network analysis is now one of the main paradigms of modern sociology and is used in many areas.
Social networks can be distinguished by their level of analysis. The first is micro-level analysis, an analysis that begins with a small group of individuals at a micro level. There are types of micro-level analysis, which are Dynamic level, Tread level, Exter level, and Subset level. The second is the meso level. The method level generally begins with the population size between the micro and macro levels. And it's less dense and can show a different causal process than interpersonal micro-level networks. The third is the macro level. This does not track interpersonal interactions, but rather tracks the consequences of interactions, such as economic or other resource transfer interactions for large populations.
To use social network analysis, a variety of theoretical frameworks are available. The salient examples of these are graph theory, balance theory, social comparison theory, and social identity approach.
And social network research groups include communication, community, complex network, crime network, spread of innovation, demographics, economic sociology, health care, living science, language and linguistics, literary network, and organizational research.

2. Interesting
When I first thought of social network, I thought there were only services like SNS, but it was interesting because there were many theories about social network and various methods and fields of research. And especially in the field of social network research, it was interesting and amazing that it was used in crime and demographics.

3. Discussion
Which field of research are you most interested in using social networks?

Comments

  1. Korean chaebol are building their own networks. They also have a connection(sometime it is illegal connection) with the media and politics. If we analyze this part through social network analysis, we will be able to get a better understand of the political/media field of Korea.
