 Topics in Sociology_Socialization

1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.

Socialization is a sociological concept, a process of preparing human beings to function in social life. This is culturally relative, so people of different cultures, races, classes, genders, and religions are socialized differently. Socialization, in essence, does not require evaluation or judgment, nor should it be required. Socialization is the adoption of culture, so it should be acknowledged and understood that it can be different. It also helps adapt socially,  but does not address all aspects of human behavior.

Socializing are divided into two groups: 1) primary socialization and 2) secondary socialization. Primary socialization is done early in childhood, and secondary socialization is an additional learning socialization, lifelong socialization that people learn by meeting new groups. These occurs by social complexity of the need for society, more according to the various roles and responsibilities they have.

Not all socialization is voluntary or successful. There is a social norm that is specially designed to socialize the unsocialized individuals. These include prisons and mental health institutions. They are designed to socialize people who are thought to have failed to socialize. Their goal is to re-socialize individuals into new lives.

2. Mention of any new, interesting or unusual items learned.

The most common way to explain the importance of socializing are using cases that aren't be socialized. They are called ‘feral’ or ‘wild’. They lack the most basic social skills generally learned in the course of socialization. Also, it is said that they have a hard time living a decent life and have a hard time learning a language because they are mentally damaged. It was a paragraph that reminded me of the Korean movie "Wolf Boy."

Reading the attached cases, I felt sorry and pitiful.
It is very difficult to socialize these individuals as part of society and requires close attention from people around them throughout their lives.

3. Identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more.

They described prison as a socializing institution, and I wondered if they thought criminals were less socialized. Some criminals may commit crimes because they are less socialized, but I think some may not. Also, I think it is an 'total institution' that has some 'forced' to view prison as an institution to re-socialize it. I think this is a little more appropriate for the institution of "punishment for wrong."
