WK 9.1 Reading Socialization - Hanane Ben Abdeslam
Socialization is a fundamental sociological concept with various elements, what not everyone agrees on which one is the most important. However, sociologist do agree on the three main goals of socialization. First, impulse control and the development of a conscience. Second, role preparation and performance, including occupational roles, gender roles, and roles as marriage and parenthood. And third, the cultivation of sources of meaning, or what is important, valued, and to be lived for. Moreover, socialization is the process that prepares humans to function in social life. It should be re-iterated that socialization is culturally relative, people in different cultures and people that have a different raze, gender, class, religion, and their sexuality. Because socialization is the adoption of culture, it is going to be different in every culture and subcultures. However, it should also be noted that, not every aspect of human behavior is learned. Of course, some aspects of human behavior are learned, like empathy and morals, but winking your eyes is something that you do since you’ve been born. Socialization is divided in ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ socialization. The first one, takes place early in life, as a child and adolescent, and the second one, takes places throughout someone’s life. Moreover, the most common reason why socialization is important, is to draw upon the few unfortunate cases of children who were, through neglect, misfortune, or willful abuse, not socialized by adults while they were growing up, like in the examples at the beginning of the reading.
What kind of shocked me is that at the beginning of the reading there were true stories given about two girls who got isolated for several years. Hereby, they missed socializing with their family, and to develop themselves. Like when they were found, they couldn’t speak or behave like a normal human being. Of course, I know what isolating could do to a person in their early lives but I would haven’t imagined how they are trying to socialize now at the moment.
Socialization is the process by which humans learn how to function in a particular society. Although it is expected that all humans experience some form of socialization during their lives. At the beginning there was an example of a girl who behaved like a dog because she was isolated with her dog for five years. Do you know another example where human being have been behaving differently than you?
