Make up classes: What I did learn from this class?

This class looked at the whole of sociology. There were a lot of things that I already knew, but it was a class to learn more about sociology through detailed content or specific examples. Most of all, through the blog assignment, I was able to have a chance to experience not only Korean cases but also foreign cases together and compare each other. Specifically, through this class, I first came across the concept of 'social imagination'. I learned that Individual have understood through social imagination that social events and social structures have been affected by people' behavior, attitudes, and culture. I was also able to understand the various roles that sociology majors play in the company after graduation. In Korea, where the degree of connection between majors at universities and professions is not great, this information will be useful for students who major in sociology. I was also able to understand the research methods of sociology. I have learned the quantitative and qualitative research methods several times, so I could review them through this class. The hypothesis test was something I already knew, but this class helped me to understand the social science study based on the hypothesis test. By closely observing this process of sociological inquiry, I thought that I would like to use this scientific inquiry to conduct sociological research on topics not presented in class. Before I took this class, I had some knowledge of sociology theories as background knowledge. However, I have never thought of the limits of each theory, through this class, I was able to look at and understand the limitations of each theory correctly. In doing so, I thought that we should not be biased toward one theory to understand the world, but to stand at the boundary of each theory and embrace various theoretical perspectives to understand society.

In addition, I also learned the field of 'cultural sociology' that understands culture sociologically. We must remember that when we understand the culture in that culture, we can fully understand the culture. This is also the first time I have come across the “Free-culture movement” in the fourth week. This class gave an opportunity to understand the position of others and to organize my thoughts between ‘protecting copyrights’ and ‘promoting new creations’. Usually, additional questions during class gave me a lot of opportunity to think. Among them, symbols shared in Korea were a fun question. This class also gave me the opportunity to think about religion. It was a pity that the religious doctrine that emphasized the ideal of equality was interpreted by people and existed in an unequal form in real life. In addition, I learned the opinions of various sociologists who understand these religions. It was interesting to see that the sociologist's position on religion changed according to his understanding of society. I learned that the role of religion understood in society depends on how we understand the world. In addition, as a person majoring in economics, dealing with economic factors in sociology was a very interesting part. It was a very beneficial learning to summarize the characteristics and limitations of capitalism and socialism with the eyes of sociologists. In addition, through this class, I tried to understand 'economic sociology' to understand economics with a sociological approach related to reality to complement the abstract modeling and ideal theory of economics. I think it is more important to learn in connection with other disciplines than to study only one field. Thinking about whether China could become a center of the world beyond the United States was a question that considers the present and the future together, so it was an opportunity to think more complexly. It was very helpful to understand the changes in Korea as an essay for the midterm exam. Before taking this class, I have studied the changes of Korea through materials in Korea. However, through this essay assignment, I had the opportunity to understand the changes of Korea through the eyes of foreigners through the materials written by foreign reporters about Korea. I was able to organize and understand power, authority, and violence, which are the forces acting on politics. I could look at the dynamics of politics. As I studied this field, I realized that the World Democracy Index is not higher than I thought. I hope that democracy goes beyond political ideology and takes its place in our life. In addition, this class helped me to summarize the pros and cons of internet voting and to share opinions with other classmates through blog posting. By learning about socialization in the ninth week, I was able to learn sociological theories looking at 'socialization'. Also, from the perspective of a structural and functional perspective, the argument that “deviation” plays an important role in society was a novel approach.

Meanwhile, in the 10th week, I had a time to understand 'social structure'. I was able to understand the opinions of various scholars explaining the social structure. Also, classifying social structures into normative structures, ideal structures, and interactive structures was the first thing I learned in this class. In the 11th week, we understood ‘symbolic interaction’. Previously, I had a narrow understanding of symbolic interaction. Through this class, I was able to properly understand symbolic interactions that describe individuals and society based on the process of forming meaning in the world through interaction. The various theories of understanding society presented in this class have been encountered so far. However, 'Dramaturgy', learned in the 11th week, is a new theory learned through this class. In fact, we had a funny idea that we might be acting out the way we want to be seen by others in reality. In addition, I was able to understand 'social inequality' and summarize 'social stratification'. After understanding the details of ‘Gender’, we have put together concepts such as ‘Race’ and ‘ethnicity’. Lastly, while looking at the data on 'Demography', I was able to understand the reality concretely through graphs.

The purpose that I take this the course was clear. It was to build knowledge to become a teacher of the ‘General society’ subject. I was able to take a detailed look at each subject in sociology. I also understand the Korea and i compared it to other countries in this class. It was a useful class in many ways that required a variety of thoughts.
Thank you.
