 Topics in Sociology_Social stratification

1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.

Social stratification means classifying people into groups based on economic factors such as wealth, income, race, education, gender, occupation, social status and power. This is the relative social position of a person within the social unit. The degree of social inequality is an important factor in determining a person's social stratum.

There are four principles underlying social stratification.
1) social stratification is socially defined as a property of a society rather than individuals in that society.
2) social stratification is reproduced from generation to generation.
3) social stratification is universal (found in every society) but variable (differs across time and place).
4) social stratification involves not just quantitative inequality but qualitative beliefs and attitudes about social status.

There is an important theory of Karl Marx from this concept. It is the 'Theories of stratification'. The social class is determined by its relationship with the means of production, and there are at least two classes in every class society. These are the owners of the means of production and those who sell them to the owners of the means of production.

2. Mention of any new, interesting or unusual items learned.

I learned the concepts of complexity and social mobility. While stratification is not limited to complex societies, it is an explanation of complexity that all complex societies exhibit the characteristics of stratification. In a complex society, the total inventory of valuable goods is distributed unevenly. Social mobility is the movement of the category of individuals, social groups, or people within the hierarchy. This can be done between inside of generations  and two or more generations. This mobility is used to classify different social stratification systems.

3. Identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more.

The social status variables in social stratification are based on people's social perception and attitude toward various characteristics. The study of models of many variables contributing to the understanding of social stratification is still an active subject to this day. It can be largely divided into economic and social factors. I would like to discus what else besides what is introduced in this article.
