Week 12-1. Social stratification
1. Summary
Social stratification is the classification of a society that divides people into groups based on socio-economic factors. In other words, stratification refers to the relative position within society. The categorization of people by social stratum occurs most clearly in complex state-based, polycentric, or feudal societies. Determining the structures of social stratification arises from inequalities of status among persons, therefore, the degree of social inequality determines a person's social stratum. Generally, the greater the social complexity of a society, the more social stratification exists, by way of social differentiation.
Four principles are posited to underlie social stratification. First, social stratification is socially defined as a property of a society rather than individuals in that society. Second, social stratification is reproduced from generation to generation. Third, social stratification is universal but variable. Fourth, social stratification involves not just quantitative inequality but qualitative beliefs and attitudes about social status. The social class may move. This is called social mobility and refers to the movement of categories of individuals and social groups between classes or within a stratified system. A society with great mobility in the generation is called open, and a society with small mobility is called a closed stratified society.
2. Interesting
The most impressive part was explaining global stratification. The development of the infrastructure of transportation communication has led to globalization and increased interdependence among countries. That is why social stratification occurs not only within one country but also between countries. If you look at the global economy, you can see countries with different social classes due to unequal distribution of capital among countries. This is a new phenomenon that occurs as society develops and a reset of the scope that defines society. It was amazing that global stratification due to inequality in resources occurred and caused another inequality.
3. Discussion
Social stratification stems from the social perception and attitudes of people's various characteristics. What do you think causes social stratification?
