Week 13-1 Introduction to Sociology / Gender

1. Summary

Today, religious and scientific communities use gender as a strong belief system and a classification system. Many who have been trained by them embrace this social composition and explain more of the world. Sociologists distinguish gender and sex. According to them, gender is a cultural classification concept, an interpretation of sex, and sex is a biological classification concept. In the social, historical, cultural, political and scientific context, cis accepts the existing gender concept (gender, sex) as it is, The trans, on the other hand, opposes this, and rejects the role assigned according to various contexts related with gender. Men and women actually have biological and social differences. Examples of biological differences are height and physical force. In addition, studies have shown that there are differences in the brain as well. On the other hand, due to discriminatory treatment, social differences such as women focusing on interpersonal relationships and men focusing on immediate challenges appear. In addition, differences in work and occupation (as a social context) are a topic of frequent discussion. Although women's participation is increasing, women's participation at all levels of education and skills is still less than men's, The distinct wage gap between women and men is another example of social differences by gender. In addition, there are differences in the opportunity to become a leader in the business world. In addition, there are differences in educational achievement.

In reality, there are gender differences in reality. Various theories about gender differences have historically provided their own opinions. First, gender socialization is the argument that socialization determines gender differences. Unlike this, structural functionalism justifies the role of gender as complementary. This theory is criticized after the women's movement. Meanwhile, conflict theory understands gender differences in terms of power relations, The social climate in which men dominate women or dominate trans is perceived as preserving the privileges of women's damages and the power of certain groups. In contrast, symbolic interaction theory focuses on the process of changing social norms related to gender discrimination. In addition, feminist theory is a mixture of conflict theory and symbolic interaction. This theory criticizes hierarchical power relationships based on existing gender. In addition, gender differences are examined in terms of past and present (the passage of time).

2. Interesting

-It is new to learn that symbolic interaction focuses on the process of changing norms related to gender.

-It is the first time I have learned that feminist theory is a mixture of conflict theory and symbolic interaction theory. It is interesting to note that the feminist theory includes a symbolic interactionist aspect.

3. Discussion

-Are there any examples of gender discrimination you have actually experienced?

-Which of the various theories about gender discrimination do you agree with? Please provide a reason.

-This text is limited to discrimination against women by men or society. It can be understood as the flow after the women's movement. When you stand on a theory, you see what you want to see, not what you see. Therefore, I think it is necessary to stand at the midpoint and try to see both sides. Is there any part of the current recognition of the gender discrimination that needs to be considered or cautioned?
