 Topics in Sociology_Race and Ethnicity

1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read.

Racial classification is caused by human biological classification according to morphological characteristics such as skin color. One cannot choose to belong to one's identity and is classified into an external group that is determined from birth. The concept of race and certain ethnic groups are often controversial topics about social identity and class. The race is also associated with physical characteristics, but it also refers to the social characteristics shared by races in each group. Social characteristics include nationality, tribe, religious belief, language, culture, tradition, etc. The term ethnicity focuses more on a group's connection to a perceived shared past and culture. An example of an ethnic group in the U.S. is Hispanic or Latino.

2. Mention of any new, interesting or unusual items learned.

Prejudice is the pre-judgment of something, which is the formation of judgment without direct experience. This means the negative views of an individual or group, mainly based on social stereotypes. It was most interesting that some sociologists argued that prejudice could be viewed as a necessary human adaptation to promote survival.

3. Identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more.

What do you think is the beginning of racism? Is there a fundamental way to eradicate racism? Do you remember being racist in a foreign country? Or have you ever been racist?
