WEEK 13 : Introduction to Sociology/Race and Ethnicity

1. SUMMARY
Race is a biological classification idea. However, it is controversial because of its racial status. In the 19th century, scholars made three claims about race. Race is said to be objective and spontaneous, have a ganglion relationship and is a valid scientific category for predicting behavior. It is said to be mainly divided into skin color, face shape, hair color and texture.
The best approach to understanding race is to recognize overlapping biological and genetic factors. But the actual standards are said to be artificial and social. We can increase our understanding with awareness of redundant parts.
Prejudice is prejudgment. Prejudice may not be interpreted as discrimination. Of course, it can lead to discrimination, but discrimination and prejudice are said to be separate concepts. Prejudice is considered negative. However, it suggests that bias is one of the factors of human adaptation that promotes viability. It's like an innate instinct.
Racism can be expressed socially, consciously, unconsciously, by actions and feelings, etc. There is racism at the individual level, and there is structural racism. Personal racism can be bullying, dismissal, and so on in schools and businesses. Structural racism refers to inequality inherent in the system. Workplace discrimination is an example. Structural racism can also be transformed into cultural and racial discrimination. In this respect, racism occurs through the transmission of culture.
In the past, racism used to be caused by historical, economic and social disparities. There are also racial profiling, etc. There is a concept of racial stratification. It is said that there was a law in the United States that restricted racial marriage until 1967.

2.INTERESTING
It is surprising that racism was an official government policy. This is because, given the relationship between countries, I felt that there should be no racial discrimination. And it's shocking that they designate colored people for the item. It reminded me of the story of the Hidden Figures.

3.DISCUSSION
There was only a story about the occurrence of racism. Therefore, it would be good to share the actions and laws that each country wants to overcome racial discrimination.

Probably, I expect most of the students taking this class will answer similarly. I am taking this class to enhance my English skills as well as to improve my social knowledge. However, since the name of this class is ‘ Invitation to Sociology ’ and the class is run in English, I am expecting to deal issues that are not only limited nationally, but also international issues, which might be hard to cover in other classes that run in Korean. I also guess that by using English to search information, I would be able to find much more information compared to researching in Korean. Therefore, by taking this class, I expect that I might be able to gain general understanding of the overall sociology and learn skills how to deal with the vast amount of the information to find the main point of the material.

1. Summary  Sociology is the study of what activities and thoughts human beings have as members of society. They are also interested in the structure of society and have a welfare system in place From small to big, the areas that society deals with vary. Sociological imagination allows individuals to deviate from self-centered perspectives and view the world as a common entity. This can interest others in their situations and encourage them to directly address the problem. W2-2 Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods

A Short Summary of ‘ Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods’ This part of the book is about the methods employed in sociology and some standards of the methods and what it tells us. In scientific methods, there are four steps. Characterization, hypothesis, prediction and testing. For the best prediction in scientific methods, we need to know the correct relationship between correlation and causation. It is important not to mistake correlation and causation. Also, quantitative and qualitative methods are two different approaches of sociological research. Depending on how we approach, we can classify objective approach, critical approach and subjective approach. Overall, it is important to obey ethics.
