Week12 : Social inequality
1. Summary
Social inequality occurs when resources in
a given society are generally distributed unevenly through allocation norms,
causing specific patterns along the lines of people in socially defined
categories. Social inequality is a discriminatory preference in approaches to
social goods in a society caused by power, religion, kinship, reputation, etc.
Social inequality is found in almost every society and can be classified as an
equal society, a ranking society, and a stratified society. An equal society is
a community that advocates social equality through equal opportunities and
rights and is free from discrimination. A hierarchical society is an
agricultural community that is grouped hierarchically from a chapter that
appears to have a status in most societies. And a stratified society is a
society that is horizontally classified into the upper, middle, and lower
classes.
And the types of social inequality can be
divided into five categories: wealth inequality, treatment and accountability
inequality, political inequality, life inequality, and membership inequality.
Socio-economic Status is a measure of an
individual's work experience based on income, education, and occupation and the
economic and social status of an individual or family relative to another
person. It is often used as synonym for social strata, with social categories
stratified by a set of stratified social categories representing the relative
position of individuals or families in a stratified matrix of stratified social
relationships.
There are many socially defined
characteristics of individuals who contribute to social status, equality, or
inequality within society. The most prevalent of these variables are gender,
race, and ethnicity. This is not to say that merit does not affect income or
wealth fluctuations in a society where merit is considered a key factor in
determining one's position or ranking in the social order.
2. Interesting
Among social inequalities, the explanation
regarding economic inequality was impressive. Because I'm in the economics
department, when I heard the word social inequality, I thought of economic
inequality and thought about it, and I was impressed by the part that you
explained about it.
What are the ways to alleviate social inequality?
I think it's important to change the small language first. As an example of sexist language in Korea, '자궁' uses '子' (son). It means the organ that embraces a son. We can use '포궁' as an alternative. It uses '胞(세포 포)' and means the organ that holds cells.
