WEEK 2-3 What is more important-our genes or our environment?

What is more important-our genes or our environment?   I think the environment is more important.   Genes are immutable from birth, but the environment is variable. And I think the impact of the environment is huge.As the saying goes, those who are close to Zhu are close to those who are black. From this sentence we can see the importance of the environment to people.Studies have also shown that most criminals are affected by dissonance in their homes when they are young, leading to crime.   So I think the environment is more important.

2-4 Why is the distinction between divine and natural important?

I think sociologists should take side. This is because it will allow sociologists to confront each other and argue for their position so that they can sort out what is close to the truth. Social theories of different perspectives can also be established. But I think they should try to remain neutral when they do research to prove their position. When sociologists conduct research, they should not intervention their own personal opinions. For example, creating questionnaires that lead to answers they want to hear or releasing only favorable data, except for opinions that do not meet their values, should be avoided. If they don't show a value-neutral attitude when conducting the research, the results of the study are not genuine, but counterfeit goods  that full of their own personal opinions. So I think sociologists should take one position, but be neutral when they do research to prove that position.

WK 1.2 Introduction to Sociology/what is sociology? - Hanane Ben Abdeslam

The world is constantly changing. In recent decades our society has developed from a fairly homogenous, orderly and stable society to a society with enormous variety and diversity. I think that sociology refers to how people develop social and emotional skills across their lifecycles. The way we walk, speak, learn, develop and how-to life in the society. Sociology focuses on the need to “put people first” in development processes. This means what is necessary for society, for the groups of people who are part of it. Sociology is based to explain changes in the structure of society. However, development has many factors that influence the results of developmental efforts. There must be a motive that drives the social change and conditions for that change to be made. So, let’s go back to the factors, organizational improvements introduced to support the innovations can take place at four different levels: physical, social, mental and psychological. Development is a human process, wh

WK 1.4, what is Wikipedia? - Hanane Ben Abdeslam

Wikipedia was founded in 2011 by Jimmy Wales and is now available in more than 300 languages and it is worldwide used to do online searching. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia written by volunteers. The name is divided in “Wiki” and “Encyclopedia”. A Wiki is a website that can be edited by any visitor. The information can be freely viewed and edited by anyone. In this way, the open character ensures that the information available on Wikipedia continues to increase. However, because everyone can edit a Wiki, the articles cannot be guaranteed with true facts/information. Wikipedia trust their community/volunteers that they check their work themselves. Whoever wants to edit must follow a strict guideline when writing articles. This includes that articles must be objective and that no copyrights may be infringed. I find it interesting that a Wiki is technically a “group project” because many people are editing it together, without exactly knowing that more people have been writing.

Week 3-1 Scientific Method

Image
Scientific Method  1. Summarize  Overall, it deals with only scientific methods among the many sociological methods we have learned earlier. It was the beginning of the 20th century that the "scientific method" itself was mentioned in dictionaries and textbooks. Later, however, questions about universality emerged and many scholars' opinions were announced. A simple scientific method is empiricism that includes empirical parts. Therefore, the process of making predictions with logical results in general and conducting experiments based on them follows to determine the right or wrong of the preceding guesswork. However, any theory cannot be considered final because the discovery of new evidence at any time can change the prior judgment. For these reasons, however, scientific methods could not be ruled out at all and cannot be ruled out now. 2. Unusual items learned In the process where scientific methods occur, predictions are made with logical results, and then

2-2 Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods

1. Summary   This document is an article on the methodology of how sociologists describe or understand social phenomena. Scientific methods base scientific investigation based on verifiable evidence, the acquisition of new knowledge. The approach to science to predict results based on knowledge of variables and relationships is called empiricism and empiricism. This approach seeks to explain and predict social phenomena. Empiricism adopts a quantitative approach and mostly uses deductive reasoning. At first, it is a method of forming hypotheses and theories and making conclusions based on empirical data. Conversely, there is an approach called qualitative sociology. This uses inductive inference that the investigator repeatedly observes the phenomenon being studied. Both approaches use scientific methods to observe, collect data and suggest hypotheses. Finally, the hypothesis is tested and verified.    Sociologists use methods such as observation, hypothesis, reasoning, and inductio

Week 3.1. Introduction to Sociology_Scientific Method

Image
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method  Introduction to Sociology_Scientific Method 1. Summarize in my own words of materials I read. It’s all about the scientific method, which follows an empirical method. This has been developed since the 17 th century. This method requires very careful observation, because it can be distorted one’s gaze. The procedure can be slightly different depending on the subject, but they are mostly similar. “Making a hypothesis, deriving predictions from them as logical consequences and carrying out experiments or empirical observations based on those predictions.” 2. Mention of any new, interesting or unusual items learned. It was interesting that we need to do components, in addition to the basic procedure. It was 3 components, Replication, External review and Data recording and sharing.  We should repeat experiment and see if results come out same. If it’s not same, that research cannot be said produced the right results.

Week 3-1. Scientific method

1. Summary Scientific methods are terms that first appeared in the 19th century. Scientific methods have a deep connection with empiricism, which indicates that reason alone cannot solve certain scientific problems. The scientific method goes through the process of Formulation of a Questionis - Hypothesis - Prediction - Testing - Analysis. Sometimes different components are required. This is a repetitive, circular process of constantly modifying information. And scientific methods are linked to other disciplines. Analytical philosophy, postmodernism, anthropology, mathematics, statistics are examples. 2. Interesting  I found it interesting to see the elements of the scientific method. It is about advancing knowledge through factors such as Characters, Hypotes, Prediction, and Experience. It was also amazing how scientific methods required intelligence, imagination, and creativity. It's because I thought they were far from science. And finally, it was interest

Week 3-1. (EXTRA) How can we make research ethical?

Image
How can we make research ethical?  There are many principles of research, that researcher must follow. For example, integrity, competence, responsibility, honesty, privacy, justice and so on. However, many of them doesn't follow these ethics. This is because several factors are imposed on coercion and accountability, while others are entirely left to researchers. This can be fixed by stronger restriction or regulations, but it must take a lot of time to settle down.  Then How can we make research ethical? I seem that the most realistic way is that researchers to develop a sense of responsibility for their own research. Also, making a 'self-assessment tabular form' will be the best tool for researchers. I look forward the day that all research has been done morally, so we don't have to discuss "how can we make research ethical" more.

2-4 How are bonds created through group enjoyment of sports(soccer, baseball, Starcraft) similar to bonds created through religious experience?

People all over the world form bonds and strengthen intimacy through sports. For example, they promote peace and develop sportsmanship internationally through the Olympics. It also feels a sense of belonging among game users and increases their unity. So how does a bond form through sports?   Sports such as Starcraft, soccer, basketball, etc. have one thing in common. The players of the team work together to achieve the common goal of victory. In the process, their strengths maximize and weaknesses boost the team's ability through strategies that other players complement. They understand each other through systems that fill each other's gaps. Also, there is a lot of practice to win, and the bond naturally builds. Even if they don't win, they encourage each other the fact that worked together and sweated together because the process is important.   Sports that strengthen the bond of groups like this grow our spirit. It makes us trust others, build our patience
week2-2 Why study history? Engels said: "We do not doubt that history ,history is related to us.Marx's German ideology also says that we know only one science – history.I think there are two things that need to be noted: one, to guide the future with history. two enhance national pride and self-confidence. From the perspective of the beneficiaries of history, history can be divided into micro- and macro-levels; one is the role of history in individuals and businesses; and the other is the role of history in the country. History itself is real, an objective fact.As the German philosopher (Wendellbane)once said, humans are historical animals.History is fundamentally different from other scientific and technological natural sciences, and in everyday teaching, we find that teaching students to understand history does not allow students to make the most of what they have learned in the past. The most important thing that history teachers teach students is to respect facts and
week 2-1 Why do people work? There is a saying that a person's mental breakdown presages the importance of his work.In Freud's words, man has a natural impulse. This impulse drives you to do something. In other words, all humans have an impulse. If unemployment rises in a country, it can cause social unrest.Work is the attitude that determines our happiness. In socialist countries, work is the role of each worker in the division of labor, embodying social and self-worth.Work is the process in which workers convert their means of production into means of subsistence through labor in order to adapt to the survival of the people and continue to develop society. Therefore, work becomes an integral part of a person.

Week 2 (Extra) Why does Korea top plastic surgery popularity charts?

Image
Why does Korea top plastic surgery  popularity charts? Korea's plastic surgery technology ranks first. The reason seems clear. I think it's because plastic surgery is so common. The reason plastic surgery techniques have to improve is because there are so many customers that they must have studied and practiced more about this field. In fact, plastic surgery has become more common and the number of doctors working in the field of plastic surgery has increased more than any other field as the number of customers has increased. Therefore, you can basically see some huge buildings with plastic surgery. I think the reason why plastic surgery in Korea has become popular with foreigners is because of the Korean Wave culture. After the Korean Wave became popular in foreign countries, K-pop has become very popular. Usually, K-pop singers have what we think of as Wannabe, so the aesthetic standard that we thought was impossible increases. As aesthetic standards increase,

2-4 Why study history?

History is so important to us as history is a required subject for the CSAT in Korea. Interest in history is also rising as historical songs once gained huge popularity. Why do we learn history?   It is to avoid repeating the same mistake Many of the accidents that are happening now have happened similarly in the past. Past ancestors used their wisdom to overcome hardships and adversity. For example, Admiral Yi Sun-shin became a hero who saved Joseon by blocking the advance of Japan during the Japanese Invasion of Korea. Also, Ahn Jung-geun shot Itohirobumi, the person in charge of the unjust treaty. Through the appearances of past heroes, we learn lessons and learn from our actions. It is also for reflection. In the past, the corrupt official used to bully the people and make them miserable. As a result, the people revolted. As such, corruption in a country causes great confusion in society History reflects on the corruption of the past and suggests what direction we should mo

2-2 Why does fashion change?

Fashion changes with the changes of the times. The first of all, Australopithecus, the origin of mankind, wore nothing, and Paleolithic people lived with only their important parts covered. And during the Three Kingdoms Period, people wore clothes with strong ethnic characteristics, and during the Joseon Dynasty, they wore clothes similar to hanbok. Currently, clothes are worn in various ways as a means of expressing individuality.   Why does fashion change? In primitive humans, they probably did not wear clothes because they had no sense of shame. In those days, humans had a low level of brain development and were remarkably lacking in the ability to think So for them, clothes would have been a cumbersome thing without need. However, there was a sense of shame in the people of the Paleolithic Age. Also, they would needed clothes to live. There had to be something to protect the body in hunting, gathering and making stone tools. So they would have lived in clothes. Today, cel

WK1. Extra, what are the pros and cons of using Naver vs Google for research purpose? - Hanane Ben abdeslam

Naver is an online searching program based in South-Korea. In Korea people are using Naver more than Google or other searching programs.  There is a competitive battle going on between Naver and Google, therefore I listed a few pros and cons of using Naver instead of Google. First of all, Naver’s search algorithm is built around the Korean language, which helps Naver deliver more relevant results than Google on many occasions. This is because the Korean language is different from that of the English language. Therefore, it provides better results. On the other side, Naver is not as good as Google at crawling and indexing. A lot of Korean webmasters are not worried about privacy issues, since they know that Naver is not going to index certain information, So, to avoid security breaches, they simply block Google bot from crawling their sites. Second, if we take the number of indexed sites per user in Naver, it will definitely be smaller than the number of indexed sites per use

WEEK 2-2 : do you think sociologists should take side or try to be neutral?

I think sociologists don't necessarily have to be neutral. The process of sociologists choosing research methods and topics is said to be close to the subjective aspect, as they once learned by looking at the sociological method process. Of course, there are benefits when they are neutral. For example, if someone says A-1 is correct and someone says A-2 is right, then they will both accept the possibility if they are neutral. In this regard, I think it would be good to have a neutral stance that is likely to embrace all possibilities. However, if there is premise that they can   accept the opinions of others without forcing their own opinions, I think it would be better and not strange to stick to a position on one side because, there is a precondition that the subject has already intervened in the topic selection.   If each sociologist studies it deeply with his opinion, acknowledges the part to be acknowledged and integrates it into one theory and one conclusion, it wou

WEEK 2-2 : why study history?

Not only can we build a better present based on the past work, but we can correct the wrong facts without being ignorant of history. First, we always try to develop through the past, whether it was old enough to be a historical fact or just yesterday. But the most important reason we have to learn history is to correct the wrong facts and not make mistakes. Recently, i saw a video that 김구라 went to Japan and informed Dokdo is Korean land. However, in the video, Japanese said that Dokdo is Japanese land, and  continue to insist that Dokdo is Japanese land to 김구라. Of course, we know the various grounds that Dokdo is our land, so even if someone says so, we can prove that Dokdo is our land through historical clue or other grounds. But if someone made a false claim about the historical facts that we do not know well other than Dokdo, can we refute it? Perhaps I do not know, so I can not refute it even if the opponent seems to be wrong. Therefore, we think that we should continue to stud

WEEK 2-2 : Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods

1) SUMMARY Scientific methods are the basis of scientific investigation. Positivism uses a lot of quantitative approaches, which is deductive reasoning, whereas sociology seeks to understand society, which is called 'Verstehen' in German. Therefore, sociology uses qualitative method, which uses inductive reasoning. Both approaches are said to use scientific methods to collect data, present theories, and formulate theories. There are Characterization - Hypothesis - Prediction - Testing , four methods. In these processes, if the results of the hypothesis and experiment are different, the hypothesis should be re-examined or reconstructed, and if the two are the same, the hypothesis is likely to be correct. The scientific knowledge is changing constantly, so the previously established theory can be controversy. And causation and correlation, and should not be confused. Qualitative and quantitative methodologies in the previous time, and they both say there are many advantage

Week 2. (EXTRA) Why study history?

Image
Why study history? Edward Hallett Carr said. "History is a continuous process of interaction between the scholar and his facts, an ending dialogue between the present and the past." I think there are two reasons to study history.  The first  is not to forget the people who sacrificed themselves in the past. Especially in Korea, there were independence activists against Japan and college students who opposed dictatorship, so we were able to achieve the current democracy. That's why we have to study history to remember them.  Secondly , as E. H. Carr said, history is a constant conversation between the past and the present. We should study history to make a better future without repeating past mistakes.

Week 2. (EXTRA) Why do people work?

Image
Why do people work? I think there are two reasons why people work.  The first is to make a living.  You have to earn money to eat, buy clothes, and maintain a living. If you can't make money, or if you can earn just a little money, you can have a hard time continuing your life.  The second reason is for self-realization.  People make their own dreams and make their own lives come true. So they can achieve their dreams by doing what they want.

Week 2. (EXTRA) Why does Korea top plastic surgery popularity charts?

Image
Why does Korea top plastic surgery popularity charts? I think Korea ranks first on the popularity chart for plastic surgery because Korean media continues to present uniform standards of beauty.  There is a celebrity with big eyes and a thin nose on TV. On SNS, people share ways to be pretty. Also, if you go to the subway and crowded city, there are plastic surgery advertisements in very large sizes.  These things encourage people to pay attention to pretty looks and instill the idea that I want to be like that.

Week 2. (EXTRA) Why does fashion change?

Image
Why does fashion change? I think fashion used to be a way to warm up and protect the body, but now it has become a way to express oneself. I think such a change in perception led to a real change in fashion. People no longer wear clothes just to protect their bodies.  And the reason why fashion trends continue to change is that fashion workers continue to make new designs and intentionally expose them to the media. People get interested when they see similar types of products on TV and SNS continuously. I think this is the reason why fashion changes.

W2-2 Introduction to Sociology / Sociological Methods

1. summary This article introduces how sociologists use it in social life research. Human beings acquire knowledge in various ways. Knowledge is obtained through various methods such as authority, experience, tradition, logic, science. Sociologists use observation, hypothesis reasoning, and inductive methods to explain and develop social phenomena in the form of theory. On the other hand, scientific methods exist. The scientific method is a cycle that leads to four stages: characterization, hypothesis, prediction and testing. In this process, correlation and causality should be looked at. Correlation means the relationship between two or more variable variables that change together. Causality refers to the relationship between two or more variables in which one variable causes another. There are qualitative and quantitative studies in sociological studies. Both of these approaches have their respective advantages and should be used in combination. In other words, it is a complementar

W2-1 Introduction to Sociology/Being a Sociologist

1. summary This article talks about the career and development of a sociology major. Through his major in sociology, he teaches what fields he can work in, and how he can influence society, and what areas he can study as a sociologist, and what procedures he or she will take. Most majors are academically interested and choose sociology majors. According to the article, most of the majors feel satisfied with their choice of majors when they graduate. Those with degrees in sociology can apply their knowledge of sociology to various fields. They have better insight into business decisions because they have a lot of knowledge in various areas, including race, gender, age, education and social class. Therefore, they are suitable channels for organizational planning, development, training, human resource management and marketing. Those who earn PhDs in sociology will have more diverse career options. They have more specialized sociological knowledge and more analytical training, wh

EXTRA) Why does Korea top plastic surgery popularity charts?

As the economy developed rapidly, Korea gained strength in many areas. One of them is K-POP. The entertainment industry has become increasingly popular and interested in people as it understands trends in the times and produces songs that fit them. As more and more celebrities were born, there were many celebrities who were outstanding in appearance to have a different competitive edge from others, and teenagers who grew up watching them became interested in their appearance because they wanted to be like and imitate them. To fix his shortcomings, he gradually carried out plastic surgery, which seems to have led to the revival of the plastic surgery industry.

EXTRA) Why do people work?

Work not only sustains one's livelihood, but also motivates and motivates one's own life. Also, by working, self-love seems to improve and self-reflect. Furthermore, for example, women in their 60s often feel that their abilities are useless as they quit their jobs.

EXTRA) Why does fashion change?

This is because fashion changes with that era. Also, the trend is influenced by the atmosphere of the times, popular entertainers, and the trend colors of the year. But what I feel these days is that the trend is really going around. For example, in 2020, retro style pants, hair bands, and wrinkle skirts are popular in the 90s.

W2-2 Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods

A Short Summary of ‘ Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods’ This part of the book is about the methods employed in sociology and some standards of the methods and what it tells us. In scientific methods, there are four steps. Characterization, hypothesis, prediction and testing. For the best prediction in scientific methods, we need to know the correct relationship between correlation and causation. It is important not to mistake correlation and causation. Also, quantitative and qualitative methods are two different approaches of sociological research. Depending on how we approach, we can classify objective approach, critical approach and subjective approach. Overall, it is important to obey ethics. Something I learned after reading ‘ Introduction to Sociology/Sociological Methods’ What I found interesting was that even though sociology is in the Liberal Arts, it includes different scientific methods. And by using these methods, we can make predictions and expl

Week 2-2 / Introduction to Sociology / Sociological methods

1.     Summary The sociologist sees the world contrary to non-sociologist and asks the question why the event occurs. They analyze the alternative to prevent the problem from occurring before the problem occurs. People can gain much knowledge by authority, experience, logic, tradition, revelation and science etc. However, the most important thing thatthe sociologist thinks is the science. The sociologist analyzes the society by using the quantitative research method and the qualitative research method. The quantitative research method is empirical research method that is interested in predicting the result based on the knowledge of related value and the relation of values. This method uses the deductive reasoning that develops the hypothesis early on and tests it by empirical data after. On the other hand, the qualitative research method sets its sights on understanding the culture and the phenomena itself. It isn’t the development of the theory. The qualitative sociologist often u

Week2-1/ Introduction to Sociology / Being a sociologist

1.     summary The sociologists don’ have the special pattern of personality. About 90% of the Sociology majors figure out the basic concept and the difference invarious theoretical paradigms of the sociology. The sociology majors discuss the ethical problem base on the evidence and use the various methods of research. They can make the report that is easy to non-sociologist. Despite it, they can develop the hypothesis by making cause and effect clearly. They can analyze the data by using the computer and can present the explanation drawn by using the statistical software.   The Sociology majors who have these practical skills can have the various careers. First, the Sociology majors can be employed in company to research and investigate something for pursuit of profits of company. They have the unique insight to decide the business related to the various elements such as race, gender and age. They have the abilities such as perceiving the trend and pattern and they have the s
